UIS –48S  FIXED FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM IMPULSE STORM

New Impulse Technologies company, together with Transpetro, Petrobras and Merco Shipping companies,  made a series of tests on 2009 — 2010 years, and obtained the approval to use its exclusive fire detection and fire fighting techniques in Petrobras’ industrial sites. On the same occasion, the company trained a series of technicians from different areas of Petrobras in the use of the automated system for monitoring, security and firefighting.

The Impulse Storm technology involves an instantaneous spray of large quantities of extinguishing materials. Depending on the configuration, it is capable of spraying up to 1 ½ tons of powder extinguisher at a distance of up to 100 meters, cutting off the flame and absorbing heat.

The simplicity and efficiency of the Impulse Storm technology allowed the development of a solution that is capable to intervene at the initial stage of a fire. Attached to a digital automatic fire detection system that monitors he environment through thermal imaging, the system can tackle a fire in less than 2 seconds after it starts. That is the UIS system. The digital system allows, through the use of thermal cameras, to detect any abnormal operation of equipment and/or materials in its field of vision, alarming the operator on the possibility of damages or incidents. The objective is to alarm before a fire begins, detecting a malfunction before it turns into fire. The system can extinguish the fire still in its early stage, before the temperature rises on the environment, allowing greater efficiency in the intervention and in the protection of the area. The system continuously monitors the thermal field in the area, interpreting the received data, performing analysis, alarming in the identification of an anomaly, and in case of accident, setting the strategy, alarm and control equipment for intervention.

The system is now being developed to identify gas leakage and the location of the gas plume. The system was extensively tested in a training center set up by Petrobras and adopted by the company for the protection of specific processes in LNG sites.

LNG is essentially natural gas that, after being purified, is condensed into a liquid state by reducing its temperature to -163 degrees Celsius. It is highly flammable and emits very high thermal radiation. The extinguishing agent is dry chemical or CO2. Since it is in a cryogenic state, the use of water causes temperature rise, increasing the flow of gas into the fire.

The Impulse Storm System can extinguish LNG fires in less than six seconds after the firing of fire extinguishers. The following images were obtained from one of the tests used by Petrobras.
